How To Buy:

What To Look For:
Buy only natural laundry and personal care products with "fragrance free" or "unscented" on the label -- and only products that are typically sold in health food stores such as Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or Wild Oats. If you buy name brands from a conventional store, the labels "fragrance free" or "unscented" can actually mean the product contains a masking fragrance, optical whiteners, or other chemicals to cover up the chemical agents in the product! Tide Free is an example of this: it claims to be "free of perfumes and dyes" but contains masking fragrance (a perfume) and optical whiteners (a dye). Typically products containing any kind of fragrance -- including masking fragrance -- will have the word "fragrance" on the label, though scented essential oils may be individually labeled (i.e. "lavender").
